Fast repair of burnt out pumps
- Shaft seals
Back on the lake with new shaft seals
A foreign ship had sought port in Odense after a fire in the engine room. The electric motor and seals in two cooling pumps were destroyed. The defective pumps were now in the workshop at Hoppe & Møldam Elektro in Ringe, where Claus Madsen and Thomas Riise were tasked with renovating the pumps in a hurry and returning them to the Port of Odense, so the ship could get back on the water as soon as possible and resume operations.
Getting the necessary spare parts on the eve of the biggest holiday of the year is a particular challenge. Especially this Christmas, when most of Denmark was facing a longer than usual period of holidays and shutdowns. Claus and Thomas immediately realized that when it came to new seals for the pumps, Betech was probably their best chance of success.
Good craftsmanship and precise advice from the specialist
Together with Bjarne Feddersen, Technical Sales Engineer at Betech, they quickly found out exactly which seal should be used in the pumps - a mechanical seal type 528 from Groupe Latty - and Bjarne sent word to the European manufacturer to arrange a rush delivery before warehouses and carriers shut down for Christmas.
The mechanical seals were successfully delivered to the workshop immediately after Christmas, and the pumps were fixed, tested and installed in the cooling system so that the ship could sail fully functional again from the North Funen coast on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Mechanical seals are superior for rotating shaft applications. But with many principle types and often even more variants of each seal type, there is a wealth of possibilities. The refurbished pumps were quickly back on the ship because Claus and Thomas are skilled electromechanical engineers and immediately sought guidance on sealing technology from Betech. In the dialog with Bjarne Feddersen, they were guided through the clarification of relevant dimensions and material selection. They could then focus on the rest of the repair work while the seals were brought out.
At the workshop at Hoppe & Møldam Elektro, Claus Madsen and Thomas Riise are proud to be able to solve urgent tasks such as the fire-damaged pumps on the ship - even at Christmas, when the logistical conditions are more difficult and the time for technical clarification is correspondingly short.
