SWG - a world-class flange gasket

The original spiral wound gasket has proven its reputation as a world-class flange seal for more than 100 years when it comes to industrial applications with high pressure, harsh media or low emission requirements.

Are you familiar with SWG?

What is a spiral wound gasket? How does it excel? Understand the SWG package and find the right type for your application and download the informative product brochures.

Here you get a concise, basic introduction to Spiral Wound Gaskets (SWG) from Flexitallic® - One of the most groundbreaking gasket types of all time for efficient and durable flange connections: useful knowledge whether you work as a buyer or technician.

World-class technology for industrial gaskets

Flexitallic® invented the spiral wound gasket back in 1912 and has continuously developed the technology with multiple variants and configurations to deliver maximum safety, flexibility and lifetime - even under the most extreme pressure and temperature conditions. As a Allied Distributor for Flexitallic Betech is your solution partner when you need a spiral wound gasket of the highest quality. With us you get fast delivery, experienced counseling and access to a global know-how.

What is a Spiral Wound Gasket?

An SWG consists of thin, vertical, spirally wound metal strips combined with a non-metallic filler material. This construction gives your gasket:

  • Excellent recovery from pressure and temperature changes
  • High chemical resistance to virtually all known media
  • The ability to compensate for unevenness in the flange face so the seal remains effective

Two unique filling materials

Corriculite® is designed for offshore and maritime applications and can reduce corrosion on flanges and thus reduce the need for flange renovations (Download brochure at the end of the newsletter).

Thermiculite® excels at withstanding extremely high temperatures and even the harshest chemicals.

Both materials are specially developed by Flexitallic® and allows you to create the most efficient and durable industrial seals.

You get many benefits with SWG

Economic / practical benefits

  • Long lifetime and fewer replacements - lower total cost of ownership

  • Local availability with advice and short delivery time

  • Standardized color coding for quick and reliable identification of materials (ASME B16.20)

  • Compatible with with common international flange standards (ASME, BS, DIN, JIS, etc.)

Functional / technical benefits

  • Flexible configuration: CG, CGI, R and RIR - customized pressure, temperature and flange type

  • Wide choice of materials - matches many operational situations:
    • Metal: fx 316LSS, Monel, Hastelloy C276
    • FillerFlexicarb® (graphite), PTFE, Thermiculite® (up to 1,000°C)

  • Custom-designed solutions for valves, pumps, compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, etc.

  • Low emission - meets CFET requirements in the oil and gas industry

Here you can use the SWG gasket with advantage

From gas turbine to pipe assembly and heat exchanger. SWG is used in many applications and industries, but some of the most obvious applications are in:
Betech is a supplier to the petrochemical process industry.
Betech is a supplier to the energy and utilities industry.
betech provides product solutions for the energy, oil and gas industry.
Betech is a supplier to the offshore and marine industry.

Petrochemical industry

SWG withstands high temperatures and aggressive media.

Energy & power plants

SWG ensures operation under changing loads.

Offshore, oil & gas

The lifetime of the flange joint is significantly extended with Corriculite as a filler.

Shipyard and marine industry

With corrosion-resistant metals such as Monel and Titanium.

Which style is right for you?

In addition to steel grade and filling material, the style of the gasket is also an important consideration when configuring the original SWG: Should it be equipped with an inner protection ring, an outer centering ring or just the spiral ring alone?
Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gasket (SWG) style CG - supplied by Betech
Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gasket (SWG) style CGI - supplied by Betech
Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gasket (SWG) style R - supplied by Betech
Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gasket (SWG) style RIR - supplied by Betech

CG Style

With outer ring for centering and over-compression protection / For use in mild to moderate conditions.

CGI style

With outer + inner ring for extra protection against heat, erosion and internal bending / Used in moderate to demanding conditions.

Inner ring is required by API standard.

Style R

Without ring, adapted to special flange profiles (grooves) such as tongue and groove.

RIR style

With inner ring for better flow control and reduced flange erosion.

The SWG brochure gives you a practical guide to choosing the SWG style according to common flange types and application operating conditions.
